Assess, Provide Feedback and Report on Student Learning
5.1 Assess Student Learning
Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning.
Assessment strategies are important in checking for understanding, and if undertaken in a positive and constructive manner can be a great way to track and encourage improvement. I believe that as long as assessment is not clouded by fear in a student, they can use it to help them fully understand the content and help them identify where they might need more help. In my placements I have emphasised how it does not matter if you get an answer wrong, assessment is to help find the spots where we might need to ask a few more questions. I think this is important so that students do not put undue stress or pressure on themselves.
5.2 Provide Feedback to Students on Their Learning
Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of providing timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning.
Feedback is essential to improvement and also gives the opportunity to provide support and encouragement to students. It can also lead to teachable moments and allow you to help a student get to the next level of understanding. I think that one of the best ways to achieve this and a good way to provide authentic feedback is through roaming the room and monitoring students so that they feel supported and do not have to come to you when they need help which could be intimidating for some students. By circulating the room you can access each student several times during a session and ensure they are all able to complete their task.

5.3 Make Consistent and Comparable Judgments
Demonstrate understanding of assessment moderation and its application to support consistent and comparable judgments of student learning.
Assessment is a hard process for some students, especially if they associate it with negative feelings. Some assessment should only be at regular periods that suit the ability levels of the students in the classroom in order to track progress and allow for the acknowledgment for room for improvements. If used positively, both formative and summative assessment can help a student identify their strengths and identify where they need more help in, this is invaluable information that can help in improving a students ability.
5.4 Interpret Student Data
Demonstrate the capacity to interpret student assessment data to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice.
After reviewing assessment, teachers are given the opportunity to see what their students have learnt and what they are still struggling with, it also gives them an opportunity to review their teaching styles and whether they are effective for the students in their class or not. Using assessment to determine these aspects of teaching is a great way to receive feedback on your teaching practices and to really see the impact you are having on the students learning.
5.5 Report on Student Achievement
Demonstrate understanding of a range of strategies for reporting to students and parents/carers and the purpose of keeping accurate and reliable records of student achievement.
Strategies for reporting to students and their parents on student progress could be done through formal or informal meetings or if it wants to be more regular than each term, class newsletters or emails could be a great way to report student achievement and progress. The newsletter could include photos of student work and daily life in the classroom so that parents can feel involved and informed about their students progress. Keeping records of achievement can be important and tracking progress and allowing students to look back and see how far they have come and also just to have record of the work they have worked hard to complete.
