Standard 7 -
Professional Engagement
Engage Professionally with Colleagues, Parents/Carers and the Community
7.1 Meet Professional Ethics and Responsibilities
Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.
There are many responsibilities as a teacher, but the codes of ethics outline many of the most important responsibilities. To ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome in the classroom is essential and should not be taken lightly. Everyone should be given the same opportunities and be treated equally. Teachers take on many roles other than facilitator in a classroom, and therefore they should understand equal treatment and the responsibilities they have in the duty of care of their students.
7.2 Comply with Legislative, Administrative and Organisational Requirements
Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage.
Understanding your requirements as a teacher in regards to legislative and administrative practices is extremely important so that you can know what to do should certain situations arise. It is important to know where you stand and to understand what the appropriate steps to take are.
7.3 Engage with Parents and Carers
Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.
Working with parents and carers can stimulate a more positive learning environment for students as their lives may feel more connected and cohesive therefore accentuating peace and dependability on all aspects of their lives. It is important that parents and carers feel that their meetings with you are confidential and a safe place to exclaim worries or concerns. As a teacher of their child it is important to understand these concerns so that you can best help the student achieve what they can. To ensure parents and carers feel this way, in the first meeting explain the rules and expectations from the meeting and maybe even set goals for what the teacher, parent/carer and student may wish to get out of the meeting. Giving them your confidence may assist in the development of the student and contribute to effective learning.
7.4 Engage with Professional Teaching Networks and Broader Communities
Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice.
In order to progress and regularly improve, it is important to consider taking the advice from external sources. Taking opportunities presented by professionals and the community can help to broaden your teaching styles and ideas that could directly contribute to the further development of your students. As a future teacher I hope to take every opportunity I can to further extend my abilities and give myself and my students every chance for improvement and reflection.
